Until recently, the idea of a Bosnian-Herzegovinan nationality mainly applied to the nation's Muslims, also referred to as Bosniaks. Things have rapidly improved since then but the two regions of Bosnia still have a long way to go towards complete political and social union. A peace treaty followed with a heavy handled role of the U.S. This of course spelled disaster for the state of Bosnia-Herzegovina and as a result Bosnia and Herzegovina became a blood bath in 1992. The result was that Bosnia would comprise of two entities and a District of Brcko. As of now, it could be said Bosnia-Herzegovina functions as one country with two or even three different parts. Bosnia and Herzegovina was attacked by the Serbian-led Yugoslav National Army and insurgent Bosnian Serbs, and in 1993 Croatia with insurgent Bosnian Croat forces joined in the aggression. Bosnia and Herzegovina's Croatians and Serbs looked to Serbia and Croatia for guidance and as the mother country and both had aspirations for political union with either Serbia or Croatia once the Yugoslav state began to fall apart in the early 1990s. Clinton Administration helping seal the deal in Dayton, Ohio. In the end the Croatian-Bosniak alliance fought the Serbian forces on the ground whilst NATO attacked the Bosnian Serbs from the air. However, the central government lies in Sarajevo and there is one common currency, the Bosnian Mark (KM).

A PDV refund in Marks can be obtained within three months, either at the same shop where you bought the goods (in that case the tax will be refunded to you immediately), or by posting the verified receipt back to the shop, together with the account number into which the refund should be paid. Upon leaving BiH, the Bosnian customs can verify (stamp) the form if you show them the goods you bought. At the shop, ask the staff for a tax-refund form (PDV-SL-2). If you have a temporal (tourist) residency status and you buy goods worth more than 100 KM you are entitled to a PDV (VAT) tax refund.

Bosnian clubs FK Sarajevo and eljezniar, won the Yugoslav Championship, while the Yugoslav national football team included Bosnian players of all ethnic backgrounds and generations, such as Safet Sui, Zlatko Vujovi, Mehmed Badarevi, Davor Jozi, Faruk Hadibegi, Predrag Pai, Bla Slikovi, Vahid Halilhodi, Duan Bajevi, Ivica Osim, Josip Katalinski, Tomislav Knez, Velimir Sombolac and numerous others.

If you plan on traveling off the beaten path in Bosnia, be aware that the nation is still in the process of clearing many of the estimated 1 million land mines left around the countryside during the war of 1992-1995. Houses and private property were often rigged with mines as their owners fled during the war. If an area or property looks abandoned, stay away from it. In rural areas try to stay on paved areas if possible. Never touch any explosive device.
Much of the countrys Serb population, however, opposed independence and boycotted the referendum. Ruled by the Ottoman Empire from the 15th century, the region came under the control of Austria-Hungary in 1878 and subsequently played a key role in the outbreak of World War I. In 1918 it was incorporated into the newly created Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, where it had no formal status of its own. After World War II it became a constituent republic of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Following the disintegration of that state in 1991, the majority of the population of Bosnia and Herzegovina voted for independence in a 1992 referendum.

This is not available for holders of passports issued in Kosovo. Valid multiple entry visa holders and residents of the European Union, Schengen Area or Monaco can enter Bosnia and Herzegovina visa-free for a maximum stay of 15 days. However, they must arrive directly from a European Union or Schengen Area member state, Monaco, or a third country that has a bilateral readmission agreement with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
However, after the defeat of Nikola Altomanovi, Prince Lazar had emerged as the most powerful lord on the territory of the former Serbian Empire. He wanted to reunite the Serbian state, and the Serbian Orthodox Church saw him as most fitted to succeed the Nemanji dynasty.
Milosevic responded to Bosnia's declarationof independence by attacking Sarajevo, its capital city, best known forhosting the 1984 Winter Olympics. In April 1992, the U.S. Sarajevo soon became known as the citywhere Serb snipers continually shot down helpless civilians in the streets,including eventually over 3,500 children. and European Community chose to recognize theindependence of Bosnia, a mostly Muslim country where the Serb minoritymade up 32 percent of the population.

Although Bosnia and Herzegovina has lagged behind its neighbours with regard to citizens use of telecommunications, the number of cellular phone subscribers increased dramatically during the first decade of the 21st century. During the same period, the number of Internet users grew exponentially.
Bosnia and Herzegovinas largest trading partners are Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and Germany. Foreign direct investment was substantial in the early 21st century, but foreign investors faced serious obstacles, including a complex legal and regulatory framework, less than transparent business procedures, and a weak judiciary. The Dayton Accords created a largely autonomous central bank, which has sole authority over monetary policy and the issuing of currency. The national currency, the convertible marka (konvertibilna marka; KM), is pegged to the euro. After the war, fiscal consolidation was strong, and most banks are now privately owned.
Within Bosnia and Herzegovina, relations with its neighbors of Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro have been fairly stable since the signing of the Dayton Agreement in 1995. On 23 April 2010, Bosnia and Herzegovina received the Membership Action Plan from NATO, which is the last step before full membership in the alliance.
From 8th century BC, Illyrian tribes evolved into kingdoms. The Kingdom of the Ardiaei (originally a tribe from the Neretva valley region) began at 230 BC and ended at 167 BC. The era in which we observe other Illyrian kingdoms begins approximately at 400 BC and ends at 167 BC. The Autariatae under Pleurias (337 BC) were considered to have been a kingdom. Agron ruled over the Ardiaei and had extended his rule to other tribes as well. The earliest recorded kingdom in Illyria (a region in the western part of the Balkan Peninsula inhabited by the Illyrians, as recorded in classical antiquity) was the Enchele in the 8th century BC. The most notable Illyrian kingdoms and dynasties were those of Bardyllis of the Dardani and of Agron of the Ardiaei who created the last and best-known Illyrian kingdom.

Bosnia also developed a sizable Jewish population, with many Jews settling in Sarajevo after their expulsion from Spain in 1492. The expansion of the Ottoman Empire into the Balkans introduced another cultural, political, and religious framework. As the borders of the Ottoman Empire began to shrink in the 19th century, Muslims from elsewhere in the Balkans migrated to Bosnia. During the roughly 450 years Bosnia and Herzegovina were under Ottoman rule, many Christian Slavs became Muslim. The Turks defeated the Serbs at the famous battle of Kosovo in 1389. A relatively secular society, intermarriage among religious groups was not uncommon. They conquered Bosnia in 1463. A Bosnian Islamic elite gradually developed and ruled the country on behalf of the Turkish overlords. However, through the 19th century the term Bosnian commonly included residents of all faiths.
In the 4th and 5th centuries A.D., Goths overran that portion of the declining Roman Empire and occupied the area until the 6th century, when the Byzantine Empire claimed it. Called Illyricum in ancient times, the area now called Bosnia and Herzegovina was conquered by the Romans in the 2nd and 1st centuries B.C. Slavs began settling the region during the 7th century. and folded into the Roman province of Dalmatia. Around 1200, Bosnia won independence from Hungary and endured as an independent Christian state for some 260 years.
